Today (): buying rate = what a bank pays you for foreign currency (watch this for money sent home); selling rate = what you pay the bank (watch this before travel).

Today in plain words

Today (2026-09-14), Nepal Rastra Bank has set one US dollar at Rs 152.59 (buying) and Rs 153.19 (selling). In everyday terms: take $100 to a bank and you walk out with about Rs 15,259. The dollar hasn't moved since the last fixing — a quiet day. For reference, the euro sits at Rs 177.00 and the pound at Rs 206.29 (buying).

Zoom out a little: over the past week the dollar has climbed from Rs 150.88 to Rs 152.59.

How to read this board

Every row is one foreign currency measured against the Nepali rupee. There are two prices because a bank is on the opposite side of the trade from you. The buying rate is what the bank pays you when you hand over dollars, euros, riyals or ringgit — so this is the number that matters when money arrives from abroad. The selling rate is what you pay the bank when you need foreign currency, for example before a flight. Selling is always a little higher; that gap is simply how banks cover their costs.

The unit column tells you how much foreign money the price is for. Most rows are per 1 unit, but a few — like the Japanese yen or Korean won — are quoted per 10 or 100 units because a single yen is worth less than one rupee. Always multiply by the unit first; Rs 92 per 10 yen is very different from Rs 92 per yen.

Why does the rate move?

Short answer: the dollar moves the world, and the rupee follows. Nepal's rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee, so when the US dollar strengthens globally, it usually strengthens against our rupee too — imports get costlier and the dollars your family sends home stretch further. Big American interest-rate news, oil price jumps, or global nervousness (when investors run toward the dollar for safety) all show up on this board within a day or two. Day-to-day wiggles of a few paisa are just noise; it's the trend over weeks that changes what things cost.

If your family sends money home

Remittance is the backbone of thousands of Nepali households, so watch the buying rate of the currency your family actually earns in. For most homes that means the Malaysian ringgit, Qatari riyal, Saudi riyal, UAE dirham, or US dollar — all on this board. When that buying rate climbs, the same month's salary abroad quietly becomes more rupees at home, with nobody working an extra hour. Two practical tips: send through licensed banks or wallets (the rate is transparent and the money is protected), and don't stress over a few paisa of daily movement — fees and timing matter far more than catching the perfect day.

If you are travelling

Here the selling rate is your number — it's what you'll pay for dollars, euros or whatever your destination uses. Exchange only what you need at the airport and do the rest at a bank or licensed money changer in the city, where the margin is thinner. Carry a small mix: some local cash for day one, the rest accessible by card. And check this board the morning you go, not a week before — a lot can move in a week.

When this page updates

Nepal Rastra Bank publishes a fresh fixing every Sunday-to-Friday morning, Nepal time. Saturdays are off, so Saturday shows Friday's numbers — that's normal, not a glitch. This page flips to the new fixing within minutes of publication each morning, and the 30-day chart above keeps the recent history so you can see whether today's move is a blip or the start of something.

Quick answers

What is the dollar rate today in Nepal?
Nepal Rastra Bank publishes one official dollar rate every business-day morning. In the latest fixing (2026-09-14), the buying rate is Rs 152.59 and the selling rate is Rs 153.19 per US dollar. Banks and money changers add their own small margin on top, so the rate you actually get is always a touch worse than this board.
What is the difference between the buying and selling rate?
The buying rate is what a bank pays you when you hand over foreign currency. The selling rate is what you pay the bank when you need foreign currency. The small gap between them is how banks cover their cost — it is normal, and it is smaller for big currencies like the dollar.
When does Nepal Rastra Bank update exchange rates?
Every Sunday to Friday morning, Nepal time. There is no fixing on Saturday, so Saturday shows Friday's rates. If the board looks unchanged from yesterday, that usually just means the new fixing hasn't been published yet.
Which rate matters for money sent home from abroad?
The buying rate of the currency your family earns in — most often the Malaysian ringgit, Qatari riyal, Saudi riyal, UAE dirham, or US dollar. When that buying rate rises, the same salary abroad converts into more rupees at home.
Should I exchange money at the airport?
Only what you need to reach the city. Airport counters use worse rates than banks and licensed money changers in town. For larger amounts, compare two or three places — the difference on a month's salary is real money.
